Effects of Ecological Processes and Human Impacts on Biological Resources

Patuxent Home

In addition to monitoring changes in biological resources, Center scientists study underlying natural and human pressures that are responsible for these changes. We examine why some species become endangered and why others become nuisances. Because of the high variability found in nature, typically our studies are long-term and rely on a combination of laboratory and field experimentation and on the development of improved statistical methods. By understanding cause-and-effect relationships between natural and human impacts on biological resources, we are able to interpret trends and work with resource managers to evaluate options to correct problems.
